What is the AOTA Representative Assembly?
The Representative Assembly functions like the U.S. Congress, voting to approve (or disapprove) official policies, statements and program-related activities. The primary difference, of course, is that Congress acts on national matters whereas the AOTA Representative Assembly acts on the Association's official policies, statements, and programs.
The Representative Assembly holds official meetings at least twice a year. The meetings are open to AOTA members who would like to observe the proceedings. The fall meeting occurs online (beginning October 24th, 2006) and the spring meeting is held face-to-face, beginning just before and at the same location as AOTA's Annual Conference & Expo.
At both meetings, Representatives discuss and consider the information and motions contained in a variety of reports from AOTA governance bodies and officials. AOTA members can also submit motions and resolutions for consideration. The Representatives consider each motion and vote "Yea" or "Nay."
Representatives typically like to hear from their constituents (AOTA members in their state or election area) before an upcoming meeting. If you have an opinion about any of the topics or reports that Representatives will consider, let them know. Assembly members are eager to hear from the people that they represent, and welcome any feedback that you can give.

2006 Representative Assembly Online Meeting
October 24 - November 7, 2006
Report Highlights
Some of the key topics in the RA's 2006 Online Meeting reports are listed below. Join us online in the "AOTA Member Comments" area of the meeting site to comment on the issues or proceedings.
Centennial Vision
See the Vice President's Report* for an update on the work of the Centennial Commission and view the Vice President's PowerPoint® slide show presentation. Read about the six Vision priorities and how these will be addressed in FY07.
Occupational Therapy Assistants
There is a great deal of work currently being done regarding OTA issues, as the President's report* outlines. Also in this report, learn about the OTA-specific recruitment materials that have been included on the Web site and on the Student Recruitment CD.
Special Interest Sections (SISs)
Are AOTA's SISs meeting the needs of our members? Read the comprehensive report by the Special Interest Section Council* which details the 18-month process they undertook and their recommendations in fulfilling RA Charge 2005C260 on SIS Organization Structure Review.
New Practitioners
Read the report of the Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD)* and let your representative know what you think about their motion on developing leadership opportunities for new practitioners at the state and national level. Also, respond to the motion which proposes to use SISs to formulate mentor relationships for AOTA student members and new practitioners.
Nominations for Awards
The Nominations information for AOTA Awards has been out for a month now, so I know you've been thinking about somebody you know who is deserving of official AOTA recognition. Nominations forms must be postmarked by October 20th, so if you haven't started to write, now is the time.
Think they (or you) don't qualify for one of the highest awards like the Award of Merit or the OTA Award of Excellence? The OT or OTA who has demonstrated contributions in a single more focused area may be a candidate for the Recognition of Achievement Award. How about a great OTA/OT team for the Terry Brittell Partnership Award?
Check out the August 26th OT Practice or the AOTA web site for information and forms. A contact person is listed for each award.
Call for Candidates for AOTA's 2007 Election: Nominations Due November 1
Participation in your national organization provides you with an excellent opportunity to have an impact on your profession. Consider nominating yourself or a colleague for 1 of the 8 positions up for election. All application materials are available online. Have a question? E-mail the AOTA Nominating Committee at nomcom@aota.org.
Call for Ad Hoc Cognition Panel
The AOTA Commission on Continuing Competence and Professional Development is establishing an ad hoc panel to explore the areas of cognition, neurocognition, and neurorehabilitation and to make recommendations about the development of a Board Certification or Specialty Certification based on their findings. Interested members should respond by October 27, 2006.
