Title:

Spirituality of Caring

 Description of the Presentation:

What does it mean to really care?  In this presentation human caring will be defined, and the major ingredients of caring will be discussed.  The presentation will cover what is important of knowing the self and a description of spiritual crisis.  An entire section will be devoted to prayer as a form of caring.  Praying is a universal phenomenon and prayer common to Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and American Indian religion will be reviewed.  An occupational therapist who has various cultures in the treatment setting on a daily basis comes into contact with a variety of methods of praying.  These methods should be respected and integrated into the treatment process with a caring attitude will increase the chances for success.  The caring attitude is expressed through the use of self by knowing the self, using empathy, respect, concreteness and a whole host of additional characteristics. 

Learning objectives are:
a) define human caring,
b) understand the characteristics of spiritual crisis,
c) understand facilitative conditions of spiritual relationship,
d) understand prayer as a form of caring in the context of various cultures.
