MiOTA 2009 Fall Conference Presentation Abstracts
Presentation # 15

Title:

The Benefits of Yoga & Pilates in our Personal Lives and OT Practice
 Presenter(s):

Susan Tons, OTR, MA, CHT; Lynette Rasmussen, OTR

 Description of the Presentation:

There is a tremendous amount of interest these days in yoga and pilates.  Both are ways to keep mentally and physically fit.  Conference participants will have the opportunity to experience both practices and understand how these methods could be used in occupational therapy treatment practices.   It will also emphasize how pilates and yoga can be beneficial for the wellness of occupational therapists themselves.  The session will begin with two 45 minute experiential segments of both yoga and pilates.  These sessions will be facilitated by the presenters who are both occupational therapists and also certified in their respective methods.  Following the experiential portion of the program, the presenters will discuss why the topic is relevant in today’s healthcare environment and to the field of occupational therapy.  A brief lecture segment will then discuss the history and principles of both yoga and pilates.  The session will conclude with small group work where participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm how these methods could be beneficial to clients or patients in their own occupational therapy practice.

Participants should wear comfortable, stretchy or loose clothing or even exercise clothes to our session on pilates and yoga as it will be mainly experiential.
