MiOTA 2009 Fall Conference Presentation Abstracts

Presentation # 17

Title:

Clinical Research in OT: A Crash Course

Presenter(s):

Ellen Herlache, MA, OTR

Description of the Presentation:

Occupational therapists are being increasingly required to provide interventions backed by sound clinical research.  An awareness of the basics of evidence-based practice (EBP) and clinical research is vital for success in today’s healthcare environment.  This workshop will provide attendees with an overview of topics relevant to the design and implementation of clinical research projects, including the identification of research problems and the development of appropriate research questions.  Information regarding qualitative and quantitative approaches to research design, data collection, and analysis will also be discussed.  Additionally, discussion of ethical considerations in the areas of client recruitment, selection, and confidentiality will provide attendees with guidelines for implementing safe, ethical research projects.  Particular attention will be placed on effective collaboration with professionals in other disciplines, as well as academic occupational therapy programs.  By the end of this presentation, attendees will have knowledge of the basic tools required for completing clinical research projects.  With this information, attendees will be better qualified to use evidence-based practice and to carry out research projects in the clinical setting.
