Presentation # 19

Title:

OT and Politics… How we can use our skills in a new environment

Presenter(s):

Claudette Stork Reid, OT

Description of the Presentation:

Many OT’s would say “Politics is something that other people do.  I just don’t have the time to get involved, and besides… what does politics have to do with occupational therapy anyway?”

Stephen Covey (7 Habits of Highly Effective People) has stated “politics is how things get done.”  As occupation of therapists, we are experts at improving our client’s functional skills as well as manipulating their environments in order to make them more effective… and help them accomplish their goals.  Politics is simply taking that to the next level.  Occupational therapy has a natural connection to politics, and this workshop will investigate the theoretical and practical connection between these two apparently disparate professions.  Looking at politics as an opportunity to practice “population-based” occupational therapy, participants will begin to see prospects for becoming more politically aware and active within their own communities.  They will also realize the connection that this activity can have to promoting their profession as well as general health for citizens.
