MiOTA 2009 Fall Conference Presentation Abstracts

Presentation # 26

Title:

Understanding OT's Role in Person-Centered Care

Presenter(s):

Marianne Hassen, MS, OTR/L; Kim Saylor, OTR/L

Description of the Presentation:

Adopting the initiative to embrace culture change and transition to a person-centered care model is complex. Understanding OT’s Role in Person Centered Care” outlines the advantages and challenges of executing the person-centered care philosophy.

This session will review many topics that fully encompass the parallels between the Practice Framework of Occupational Therapy and Person-Centered Care.  The session will begin with a complete review of the history of culture change within the skilled nursing environment, emphasizing the newest transition to a Person-Centered Care Model outlined by the National Person-Centered Care Coalition.

The session will explore how to “operationalize” the philosophical model within a facility.  Issues such as occupational therapy’s specific role, interdisciplinary considerations, and interdepartmental overlaps will be presented.  Advantages and disadvantages of implementing a Person-Centered Care Model will be discussed through a traditional SWOT analysis format.  Most importantly, change management considerations will be explored to assure the best probability for success.  Finally, the session will conclude with a group break-out application learning session.
