Title:
Systematic Review of Literature Answering "What treatment is most effective for OT to address chronic low back pain?"
Presenter(s):
Debra Lindstrom Hazel, PhD, OTR; Meghan Zolp, BS, MOTS
Description of the Presentation: Purpose: to review recent literature in a systematic manner to answer the question “What treatment is most effective for occupational therapists to address chronic low back pain (CLBP)?” Current “best practice” in occupational therapy will be discussed.
Method: The MedLine database was searched between 2002 and 2009 for articles available in English that addressed the research question. Thirty randomized clinical trials that addressed CLBP with at least a 3 month follow-up were reviewed by three researchers: one graduate student conducting masters’ level research, one experienced clinician with masters’ level training and one experienced clinician with research training.
Results: international literature findings were reviewed to compare biomechanical, Back School, Problem-Solving, Graded Activity, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment and “integrated” approaches for effectiveness.
Conclusion: Recommendations for occupational therapy “best practice” will be discussed.
Day and Time: Sunday, 10:30-11:30
