MiOTA 2009 Fall Conference Presentation Abstracts

Presentation # 30

Title:

Assessment for and exploration of current Electronic Aids to Daily Living

Presenter(s):

Douglas Rakoski, MA, OTR, ATP; Jamie Mayo, M.S.E, RET

Description of the Presentation:

Many individuals with a disability are unable to control their environment. An electronic aid to daily living (EADL) provides independent control of lights, appliances and devices. A proper assessment helps to determine the types of EADLs that best match a client’s needs and goals. An occupational therapist conducts an EADL evaluation to identify individual goals, the client’s daily routine within different environments and the number of devices to be controlled. The functional abilities of the client are assessed to determine the access method, type of feedback required, and the number of steps the client can follow. New technologies can offer many choices in EADLs and deciding what options are truly needed can be a difficult task. An occupational therapist can best match the needs and goals of a client with an EADL device allowing for increased independence.

This session will explore low technology to high technology options currently available. Evaluation of these devices will include access methods, basic features, options, feedback, operation and price.  Results from a retrospective review will be shared regarding trends in the types of EADLs available for clients with various physical limitations. Information regarding long-term use of EADLs will also be discussed.
