MiOTA 2009 Fall Conference Presentation Abstracts

Presentation # 31

Title:

Aquatic Therapy: Its Not Just Pool Noodles and Arm Floaties

Presenter(s):

Jamie Balzell, OTR; Devyn C. Baker, CTRS, CCLS

Description of the Presentation:

Have there been times when you have been puzzled by the patient who doesn't progress with traditional therapy? This workshop will offer you new tools to enhance your therapy outcomes.  It is designed for the health care professional (occupational therapist, recreational therapist and physical therapist) desiring to begin work in or increase knowledge / skills in aquatics.  A problem based approach is used to determine the aquatic treatment strategies best suited to the rehabilitation patient; based on their identified functional outcome, the task analysis of that outcome, and the impact of water on their movement.   Various treatment techniques will be shown to emphasize the strengthening and symmetry of the trunk while activating and strengthening the extremities towards the functional outcome. Safety and swim skills will be reviewed as they can be applied to “land” function.

Day and Time: Monday, 10:30-11:30

Category: ED, PSYCH, PHYS

Level: Student - Intermediate
