Title:

Acute Care Edema Management

Description of the Presentation:

The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of current edema management principles for acute care patients.  The presentation will include a review of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, identification of disease processes that may result in swelling, acute evaluation process, the impact of swelling on ADL/IADL, general edema management principles, and selected case studies.   Also discussed will be various challenges to swelling management, contraindications for treatment, troubleshooting if reduction is not achieved, things every therapist can include in practice to promote healthy lymphatic function, and various products that can assist with swelling management including: compression garments, night devices, bandages, and sequential pumps.
