MiOTA 2009 Fall Conference Presentation Abstracts

Presentation # 35

Title:

Inconsistencies Between Quantative Responses Related to Fear of Falling

Presenter(s):

Carla Chase, EdD, OTR; Katie Krauseneck, MS, OTR; Lauren Wiseman, MS, OTR; Amy Zanayed, MS, OTR

Description of the Presentation:

Participants receiving home modifications were asked questions relating to his or her level of fear or worry during specific ADL and IADL tasks.  Inconsistencies were noted when comparing level of worry about falling reported during a survey and responses to a semi-structured interview.

Eleven older adults who were scheduled to receive home modifications from a volunteer organization were given the Survey of Activities and Fear of Falling in the Elderly (SAFFE) and interviewed in order to explore the impact of this community program. Nine of the eleven participants indicated that they were “not worried at all” or “a little worried” about falling during a specific activity, yet either scored “very worried” in related areas or had a contradictory response during a semi-structured interview. Implications for measuring the outcomes of home modifications as well as indicators for client adaptability will be discussed.
