Presentation # 6

Title:

Univeristy and Community Partnerships: The Creation of the Autism Collaborative Center

Presenter(s):

Pamela Lemerand, PhD, OT

Description of the Presentation:

This presentation describes the creation of the Autism Collaborative Center at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). The Center represents the partnership of EMU and a number of community agencies to create a family-centered, comprehensive, interdisciplinary community of practice to serve families with Autism. The Center will serve as a hands-on student training vehicle for seven to nine disciplines within the university to increase capacity to serve people with autism. This nonprofit model of wrap around services has great potential to be replicated. Research on best practices of intervention will be part of the fabric of the Center.

The Occupational Therapy Department at EMU has taken primary leadership in the development of this Center. Through the use of client centered practices, the Center involved community and parent partners from beginning to end. The success of this participatory, community based process can serve as a model for creating new programs and areas of practice.
